Aiden Lassell Ripley, born in Boston in 1896, was a multifaceted American artist known for his proficiency in watercolors, oil painting, printmaking, and teaching. Initially interested in music, Ripley later found his calling in painting, inspired by the natural landscapes and wildlife he encountered during his upbringing in Massachusetts. Ripley's artistic journey took a significant turn when he won the Paige Traveling Fellowship in 1917, allowing him to study abroad in Africa, France, and Holland. This experience greatly influenced his work, enabling him to produce a large number of watercolors and oil paintings during his travels. Upon his return to Boston, Ripley's first one-man show at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1926 was a resounding success, highlighting his strengths as a draftsman and his mastery of watercolors. Ripley is particularly celebrated for his sporting and wildlife art, a genre he embraced during the Great Depression. His keen interest in outdoor sports and wildlife conservation is evident in his paintings, which accurately depict the life of a sportsman in the early to mid-20th century.
